It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? #imwayr [9.13.21]

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? originated as a meme that started by Shelia at Book Journeys, then it passed onto Kathryn at The Book Date. Then the Unleashing Readers, Jen Vincent, Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee decided to give it a twist by having a #kidlit focus. So this is a time to share what you have been, currently are, and will be reading soon!

If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, early readers, chapter books, middle grade, young adult, or anything in those genres – then join us! This is also a great opportunity to see what others are reading and you might find your next “must-read” too!

It was a great four day week and I am hoping for some more fall-like weather here in Missouri! I binge read 56 Days this weekend because it’s been SO long since I’ve done that and it was so so good. I hope to read a bit more this week in my time at home. I am dog sitting so it may be a struggle… We’ll see!

Have a great week of reading everyone!

  • The Dancing Trees by Masiana Kelly and illustrated by Michelle Simpson
    • A picture book about respecting the world around you, especially the trees. Thomas’ friends challenge him to spend the night in the woods all by himself. As Thomas travels through the woods he doesn’t think its as bad as they’d thought. He leaves pieces of trash and string so he knows how to get back out. After it rains he notices everything is gone. He remembers what his family always told him about how precious the Earth is. When he gets ready to head out with this new perspective he finds the strings are back in place and is truly grateful for the trees. The illustrations were vivid and I loved the color scheme. The story seemed a bit forced/unnatural to really learn from the message.
  • Scary Stories for Young Foxes: The City by Christian McKay Heidicker
    • A great sequel that has even more horrific stories and I loved the new setting. My favorite is still the first book, but I know readers will love this one too! As before there are some parts that are quite “gory” but upper elem and middle school readers will definitely enjoy it.
  • 56 Days by Catherine Ryan Howard
    • A binge-worthy read! This is set during COVID-19 in Dublin, Ireland. It was a bit eerie to read about this in a book for the first time in such a manner where strict quarantine guidelines were put into place, food shortages, restricted number of people in grocery stores, etc. All you know is that someone ends up dead after 56 days have passed. You learn about the two main characters and try to puzzle it all together… My predictions evolved throughout the book and I had to stop to reread parts many times because I’d say “wait, what?!”—I was too shocked! Highly recommend if you are ready to read a timely psychological thriller!

  1. I’m so glad you got to binge-read a good book—56 Days sounds like quite the exciting and terrifying read! The art in The Dancing Trees looks lovely, but it’s a shame the story is too heavy-handed. And I keep hearing good things about One Kid’s Trash—how has Jamie Sumner written so many books so quickly! Thanks so much for the great post, and good luck dog-sitting this week!
